Frequently Asked Questions
Who are you?
My name is Lee Elia. I was born in NYC in 1963, and grew up there,
in NJ, PA, and in Europe. I currently live in Norfolk
Virginia, where I work, write, and photograph. I also
enjoy composing and
playing music in my improvised recording studio (think Brian
Eno
with a beat), cooking, and seeing off the wall art cinema &
foreign films. I read a lot and I prefer to live life as a participant
rather than as a spectator. More...
What are you going to use my pictures
for?
I do this for fun. It's how I relax; my passion, not my job. Poetry
with light. I constantly update my portfolio with new images,
and some of them I use on this website to promote myself. I enter
photos in contests and exhibitions, both online and in galleries.
I make fine art quality prints. I sell prints to collectors. And
since you asked, I'd love to have a book out one day.
Did you go to school for this?
No. I received my first camera in 1973 and I am completely self-taught,
mainly from reading and looking at other peoples' work. I
have
a BS degree (cum laude) and attended graduate school, both in
psychology. Before majoring in psyc, I started out studying
radio
broadcasting and film-making (at NYU). Currently, I also do web
design and UNIX system administration.
Are you looking for models?
Yes, all the time. I'm in Norfolk in southeastern
Virginia.
You could
be experienced, just starting out, or this could be your
first time before the camera. All of the models in these
images worked on a Time For Prints (TFP) basis with me,
where the model received copies of the pictures in exchange
for the time modeling. I occasionally travel to Long Island
New York and people in that area should feel free to
contact me; however, you will generally need to come to
Norfolk if you are from anywhere else out of the area. More...
What is Time For Prints/CDROM?
This means we do photos, and I don't pay you and you don't
pay me. I find this benefits the people I work with, and
myself, more than charging for photography would. Instead of
hiring me, you can spend your money getting prints for a nice
portfolio or getting the outfits you need. As far
as the photography I do with models, it is almost
exclusively Time For CDROM. This is a variation of Time for
Prints where a model received prints in exchange for posing
for a photographer. Instead of prints I give the model a CDROM
with all of the images we have taken. Time for CDROM...
Do you have a studio?
I live on the beach in Norfolk Virginia where I love to work. I prefer
natural lighting and a lot of the work in my studio uses natural sunlight.
I also
like to shoot outdoors in nature, and in old buildings. I've also shot
at my models' places too. I find the best images come when a model
is
in comfortable surroundings.
What if I don't want to be recognized?
If you want to pose but are concerned about being recognized,
the images don't have to show your face or any of your recognizable
features. I am happy to protect your identity.
What if I don't want to be naked?
You don't have to be. There is never a requirement to be naked.
Some models are very comfortable with that, and some are not.
If you aren't, that is fine. I want people to pose within the
limits they are comfortable with. There are lots of pictures waiting
to be taken that involve partial, implied, or no nudity at all.
